National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

Eligibility - Discipline

There are four eligibility requirements: citizenship, discipline, academic status, and the ability to accept the full benefit. You must meet all four requirements in order to be eligible.

What areas of study are supported?

Your area of study must fit under one (or more) of the fifteen supported disciplines:

  • Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering
  • Biosciences
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Civil Engineering
  • Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences
  • Computer and Computational Sciences
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Geosciences
  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering
  • Oceanography
  • Physics

My field of study isn't one of the supported disciplines listed. Which discipline should I select on my application?

Select the discipline that your course of study is most closely related to. Often times, a student's research still relates to at least one -- if not more -- of the program's supported disciplines.

My field of study falls under two or more disciplines. Which one should I choose?

Pick the discipline that best fits your proposed research. If you are still uncertain as to which discipline is most appropriate, consult your academic advisor.

While reviewing program applications, reviewers reserve the right to forward an application to another discipline for further consideration if they feel doing so may increase the applicant's chances of being selected for an award. Therefore, do not worry about choosing the "wrong" discipline. Instead, do your best to pick the discipline that most closely matches your proposed research.

My science or engineering specialty is not specifically listed. Should I apply?

You may still apply. In this case, we recommend the discipline that most closely matches your current field of study.
